Gardens Anonymous: The Swimming Pool of an English Estate
Sunday January 31, 2010
Several years ago on a work-related trip to England, a very talented and generous stonemason toured us around several private estates in the countryside, ostensibly to see examples of his stone. While the stone work was exceptional, the settings were--not to be too dramatic-- life-altering, especially for a young American designer like me.
The swimming pool area of this particular property was notable for the juxtaposition of a very classic symmetrical spatial arrangement with a very contemporary composition of plants.
The upper level nearest the adjacent building has a very composed seating arrangement that is completely integrated within the larger design.
The view over the pool and its adjacent terrace is so serene. The combination of the randomly placed boxwood bumps in the sea of grass is evocative of the ocean--like dolphins in the waves. It also plays nicely against the crisp hedges and rectilinear hardscape.
A detail of the planting combination
Looking back at the adjacent building, which I assume is some type of recreational space, the strong relationship to the architecture is apparent.
I believe this space was designed by Tom Stuart Smith.
